Entry Guidelines

Welcome to the Northern Territory’s own annual short film competition.

Please read the following very carefully – we wouldn’t want all your hard work making a film going to waste because it didn’t fulfil the entry requirements!

Conditions of Entry

In order for your entry to qualify for inclusion in the Homegrown Section judging process, it must adhere to the following conditions:

  1. Principal creators of entries, must have been NT residents for at least 6 months at 16 July 2007;
  2. Entries must contain vision of the 2007 Fist Full of Films Featured Object (FFoFFO – formerly known as the keyword), BALLOON. This must be clearly visible at some point in the main body of your film, between the opening frames and the closing credits;
  3. Entries must not have been screened publicly prior to FFF screenings;
  4. Maximum length of entries, including credits, is 5 minutes;
  5. All entries must be submitted on MiniDV tape or DVD;
  6. Entries may only be submitted to one section of the competition, eg. if you have submitted your entry to the Homegrown Section, you cannot enter the same film in the New Shoots Section;
  7. There is no limit to the number of entries submitted (as long as they’re all different!);
  8. Entries must be accompanied by a still from the film for publicity purposes;
  9. Entries must not infringe copyright. All music used must have permission from the licence holders (for more information see www.apra.com.au);
  10. Entries must be received or postmarked no later than 5pm 16 July 2007. Hand delivery to Brown’s Mart Community Arts, corner of Smith St and Harry Chan Avenue, Darwin, NT. Postal deliveries to GPO Box 2429, Darwin, NT, 0801;
  11. Fist Full of Films and Brown’s Mart Community Arts will not be held liable for any loss or damage to entries submitted. Do not submit the original – send a copy!;
  12. Entrants implicitly accept FFF and BMCA’s right to screen entries in full or in part as part of promotion of Fist Full of Films short film competition and/or screenings.

NB. Entrants who do not accept and adhere to the above will not be eligible for judging.

Judging

  • Entries to the Homegrown Section will be shortlisted by the Fist Full of Films Selection Panel before being submitted to the FFF Judging Panel, a group of nationally and internationally respected Australian film industry professionals.
  • Finalists will be notified by Friday 27 July 2007.
  • Non-finalists will not be contacted and should assume their entry has not qualified for judging if they have not been contacted. If this does occur, please don’t be discouraged – ask for feedback, improve your skills, go to the screenings and see where you might have gone wrong, and try again next year!
  • Judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Judges will select seven entries to receive Galah Awards, chosen from among the following categories:

    Best Film

    Best Screenplay

    Best Production

    Best Soundtrack

    Best Actor (male or female)

    Best Cinematography

    Best Editing

    Best Use of Featured Object

    Best Comedy

    Best Animation

    Best Drama

    Best Documentary

A further Galah Award, People’s Choice, will be awarded according to votes cast at Darwin screenings (see below).

The winner of the Deckchair Cinema Best Film – Homegrown Section Award will receive $1,000, and the Darwin Film Society People’s Choice Award receives $500, both courtesy of the Darwin Film Society.

Other Galah Award-winners receive cash prizes, and/or film and television industry facilities access and training opportunities (yet to be confirmed), courtesy of our industry supporters.

Screenings

FFF Homegrown Section finalists will be screened at the Fist Full of Films Galah Awards Premiere at the Deckchair Cinema on 20 August 2007, and again on 21 August 2007, as part of the 2007 Darwin Festival program (see Darwin Festival and Deckchair Cinema programs for times).

Subsequent screenings will follow as part of the FFF Regional Screenings Tour, with dates in Katherine (as part of the Flying Fox Festival), Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy and Alice Springs to be announced. (Other locations to be confirmed.)
