Tune in to ABC Stateline this Friday 11 June @ 7.30pm for a story on the films made at Darwin Correctional Centre.

The Fist Full of Films Festival is over for 2010.
The biggest ever NT made film festival was a roaring success – great films, clips, music, socialising and networking and some interesting sessions. Just over 1000 people came along over the 4 days, that’s 1000 people that contributed to cultivating Territory screen culture . . . so thanks for coming.
If you missed out on seeing all those great films and clips look out for other screenings in Darwin later in the year and the Fist Full screen programs that will tour the NT.
For all you people who came to the festival we’d love your feedback, tell us what you liked, what you did not like and what you want more of. For those people that attended the sessions and forums please give us your feedback too. Your feedback will help us to plan FFoFF 2011 and your comments can help attain funding for it. So let us know soon, please email fistfulloffilms@brownsmart.com.au

Now is the time to start making your films and clips for 2011
Fist Full of Films Festival
2 – 5 June 2011
Civic Park and Browns Mart Darwin City
Deadline for short film and music clip entries Tuesday 3 May 2011.
Films and clips must be made in 2010/2011 by Territorians in the NT.
Over the next few months we will update you on award initiatives for 2011.
The use of the key word or key object is not compulsory
in your film or clip but we challenge you to use it in some way.

Remember – if you need any help making your 2011 entry contact Fist Full and you are welcome to use the Fist Full email network to call for any help you may need.

The key word or object for 2011 is CROCK
The word crock can mean:
Crock - slang for a botched attempt or design
Crock – a falsehood – foolish talk – nonsense
Crock – dishware or vessel
A misspelling of Croc, short for crocodile.
Crocked - slang for heavily intoxicated from alcohol
Crocked – disabled – wrecked – decrepit

Now for 2010 the winners . . .
Saturday 5 June the finalist screening and the Galah Awards
An audience of over 500 watched the twenty eight (28) finalist films and music clips
in Civic Park on Saturday the 5 June, followed by the announcement of
seven (7) Judges Commendations and seventeen (16) Galah Awards.
4 first time filmmakers with no budget films won Galah Awards,
so don’t think you need to be a professional to win an award.
We received great feedback on the quality of films and clips and what a great festival
. . by just about everyone. The Minister for the Arts Hon. Gerry McCarthy MLA attended
2 nights of the festival and was well impressed; Gerry and his wife Dawn were seen bopping
away to Barry Brown and the GetDown late into the evening at the post Galah Awards party.
Barry Brown strutted his stuff and got the audience all funked up.

The audiences opinion of a good film does not always match the Judges, so our People’s Choice Galah Awards tell us what type screen stories Territorians like, so here is a rundown of what films and clips people really liked.

The JURY
The people that determined the GALAH AWARD winners. Many thanks go to Maggie, Pauline and Bill - our JURY members for their time and support of Territory filmmakers and Fist Full.

MAGGIE MILES - PRODUCER
As the producer with Burrundi Pictures in Darwin, Maggie worked with the Yirrkala community in the script development of the feature Yolngu Boy (2000) and went on to cast Yolngu Boy and was intimately involved in the production. Maggie spent 12 years working in film & TV in the NT, leaving in 2002 to pursue her film career in Melbourne. Maggie undertook postgraduate studies in producing at the VCA School of Film & Television (2007) graduating as Most Outstanding Producer and with 5 Awards going to the short film she produced.
Maggie is also an accomplished actor and has graced Darwin's stages and appeared in numerous television commercials in her day. In the past few years she has appeared in a number of TV series and more recently feature films including Salvation by Paul Cox as well as working on a number of productions. As the Producer and Production Manager of the successful feature Van Dieman’s Land (2009) she is destined for bigger things. "As far as I'm concerned I'm still a local Darwinite you know - I think 12 years qualifies me for that . . ."

PAULINE CLAGUE – PRODUCER / DIRECTOR
Pauline is from the Yaegl nation of Far North Coast NSW. She entered the industry via a television course at AFTRS in 1994. Since then she has been an integral part of many Indigenous content films and TV programs and series’ produced across Australia. She is well known as a writer and has worked in many areas of the media industry, from a radio presenter on her show Kiss My Black Arts to mentor for other producers.
In 2009 she directed three docos, Meeting Ms Right, Maralinga the Anangu Story, and Ngura the Anangu Story and produced a short film First Contact for the Indigenous film festival in Canada which was chosen to play in Berlin this year. She runs her own production company, Core Films with fellow filmmaker Rima Tamou, making docos such as Ankula Watjirira, The Awakening, When Colin Met Joyce. Always an educator and mentor she was appointed the Indigenous Training Officer at Australian Film Television and Radio School’s new Indigenous Open Course Program in late 2009 working there part-time. This new job sees this very busy and talented woman spending more time in the NT.

BILL WADE - MDE, B.Ed, BAH, AGDDET, Dip. Music Industry, Associate
Professor and Head of School Creative Arts & Humanities - Charles
Darwin University.

Bill has given much support to Fist Full of Films over the past few years and assisted creative alliances between CDU, students, Fist Full and filmmakers. Bill's hobbies and some of his qualifications are related to his love of music, performing and sound design, which formed the basis of his new media company - DOME Productions (1994- 2005). Imports from Canada, he and his family have now settled into the Territory lifestyle. Bill started out as a primary school teacher, and then went on to chair teacher education programs for Canada's Northwest Territories. Bill was formally recognised in Canada as a leading new media educator and honoured with the Canadian New Media Educator of the Year Award in 2000.
Professionally, Bill is a dedicated new media educator and emerging researcher in distance education and innovative educational technologies, especially as applied to creative industry education and training. His current research interests relate to new media and music production facilitated by collaborative online spaces that can bridge both geographical and cultural distance. In 2009 he was appointed Head of School Creative Arts & Humanities, a position that will help CDU students and the NT keep pace with the future.

The Selection Panel
Are a group of locals with a variety of screen and artistic skills that watch all the entries and scored them on the “engagement or enjoyment” factor, from these scores they selected the top 28 films and clips that then went to the JURY who discerningly selected the Galah Award category winners. The Panel also determine if the entries have met the terms and conditions of entry. A proxy scorer is on the panel to allow a panel member to stand down from scoring a film or clip they may have any involvement in. Fist Full would like to thank - Annie Drum / Angela O’Donnell / Birut Zemits / Todd Whitaker / Rusty Stewart / Tim Parish / Salvatore Finocchiaro / Sue Denton / Peter Houtmeyers / Karen Maxwell – Proxy Scorer, that gave their time and expertise to select the finalists.

"Regulating Sex" screened Sunday 6th as part of the Territory Screen Showcase - and has cause hoo haa in Government, the press (see the front page on Sunday's NT News) about brothels and sex workers with debates on Facebook and in the paper and on radio. That’s what documentary making is about, to get issues out there and people talking about them. This doco certainly did that, and Fist Full wants more of them. What NT issues or troubles gets you agitated? Maybe you should make a doco about it.

As mentioned in the program - Regulating Sex
Seranna Shutt / Sienna Productions / Director–Dixi Joy Bankier
Four women in the sex industry reveal what it’s like to work in Darwin
and the incongruous "Prostitution Regulation Act" they have to work within.
